Goblet of fire illustrated paperback6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() Have you read it recently? What were your thoughts?Īnd without further adieu, here are my favorite illustrations from the illustrated Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire. GoF gets really social justice-y, so it was truly an emotional ride. I cried a lot throughout the book - when the death eaters showed up at the World Cup, oh gosh it tore me up. Reading the story in today's world was really tough. new paragraph Mary GrandPr has illustrated nineteen beautiful books. I just have high expectations, maybe?Įither way, there are beautiful illustrations and I wanted to share my favorite from the book. Her most recent book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Still I love that they're creating illustrated versions for the entire series. ![]() ![]() Order of Phoenix is my absolute favorite Harry Potter novel, so I really hope the illustrated version lives up to my expectations, though it may be five years before it exists. There were promises of more detail and more illustrations, which was the reason for the two-year wait for GoF, and I just feel lied to. Legit, there were entire chapters without illustrations. Don't get me wrong - I'm glad this illustrated version exists and I own it, but the wait for this book was twice as long and I felt like there were hardly any illustrations inside. Well, I thought I was disappointed with the illustrations in Prisoner of Azkaban, but this Goblet of Firedisappointment is a whole new world of letdown. ![]()

Point omega delillo6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() He said this more than once, Elster did, in more than one way. The true life takes place when we're alone, thinking, feeling, lost in memory, dreamingly selfaware, the submicroscopic moments. The true life is not reducible to words spoken or written, not by anyone, ever. In this compact and powerful novel, it is finally a lingering human mystery that haunts the landscape of desert and mind. Then a devastating event throws everything into question. The three of them talk, train their binoculars on the landscape and build an odd, tender intimacy, something like a family. Weeks later, Elster's daughter Jessica visits an "otherworldly" woman from New York, who dramatically alters the dynamic of the story. Finley wants to persuade Elster to make a one-take film, Elster its single character "Just a man and a wall." ![]() There he is joined by a filmmaker, Jim Finley, intent on documenting his experience. ![]() He has retreated to the desert, "somewhere south of nowhere," in search of space and geologic time. Richard Elster was a scholar an outsider when he was called to a meeting with government war planners, asked to apply "ideas and principles to such matters as troop deployment and counterinsurgency." Now, in Point Omega, he looks into the mind and heart of a "defense intellectual," one of the men involved in the management of the country's war machine. In his earlier novels, he has written about conspiracy theory, the Cold War and global terrorism. Don DeLillo has been "wierdly prophetic about twenty-first-century America" (The New York Times Book Review). ![]()

CHINA by Tom Carter6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() What Carter found along the way, and what his photographs ultimately reveal, is that China is not just one place one people, but 33 distinct geographical regions populated by 56 different ethnicities, each with their own languages, customs and lifestyles.ĭespite increased tourism and surging foreign investment, the cultural distances between China and the West remain as vast as the oceans that separate them. The horse the wheel the language6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, there is at least one glaring problem with each approach. He does this via two channels: their language, and the physical remains of their culture. Instead of the history that is largely barred to us, this book is really Professor David Anthony attempting to figure out who these speakers were and what their lives looked like, without the benefit of any written words. The oldest products of their daughter languages – like the Rig Veda – date from well after the last speakers of the original language passed away. Proto-Indo-European speakers produced no written works, so almost all of their specific history is lost. I ended up learning some of that, but this is more a book about linguistics and archeology than about history. ![]() I picked up the book hoping to learn a bit about really ancient history. It and the people who spoke it are the subject of David Anthony’s book The Horse The Wheel And Language 1. This ancestor language is now awkwardly known as Proto-Indo-European (PIE). ![]() The only reasonable explanation, he claimed, was the descent of these languages from some ancient progenitor. He concluded that the similarities in grammar were too close to be the result of chance. The modern field of linguistics dates from 1786, when Sir Willian Jones, a British judge sent to India to learn Sanskrit and serve on the colonial Supreme Court, realized just how similar Sanskrit was to Persian, Latin, Greek, Celtic, Gothic, and English (yes, he really spoke all of those). ![]()

A face like glass review6/6/2023 ![]() One of the most joyous aspects of A Face Like Glass is that, from a brilliant premise, Hardinge goes on to weave a richly textured world in which that premise fits naturally, and the reader is able to suspend their disbelief. ![]() ![]() It soon emerges that this is a world where characters are incapable of spontaneously producing faces as babies, and must be painstakingly taught a series of ‘Faces’ (the number and breadth determined by one’s social class) by ‘Facesmiths.’ Neverfell, however, is unable to lie, because her face always shows exactly what she is feeling – she has “a face like glass”. Entrapment is a recurring motif (light is provided in this subterranean world by ‘flytraps’, predatory plants which depend on human breath to emit luminescence), and the novel’s inciting incident occurs when Neverfell discovers a gap in Grandible’s tunnels while pursuing a rabbit (in a possible sideways nod to Lewis Carroll), and escapes into Caverna. ![]() |
